Unanue To Drop Out And Be Replaced By Zimmer

Andy Unanue is dropping out and being replaced by Dick Zimmer, a former Republican Congressman who currently works in DC as a lawyer and lobbyist. Is a DC lawyer/lobbyist what we are looking for in a candidate. No. That kind of record doesn't exactly scream "reformer". He got beat out by Rush Holt about a decade ago while under fire for some suspicious activities.

The Republican leadership in NJ has not been showing any leadership. They have been bouncing around like a ping pong ball while showing absolutely no loyalty or faith in any candidate. They have shown no party unity whatsoever.

For Libertarians this is good news. Conservatives are bolting from the Republican party because of the obvious backroom antics, lack of any progress in the state, and no interest in changing the status quo.

You can find news stories on this topic everywhere on http://www.nj.com/ and http://www.politickernj.com/.

I am a bit worried about Zimmer's entry into the race, as he has a high name recognition factor for the primaries. The upside to it might be, though, that it will split the establishment vote even more than it already was.

FWIW (shameless plug), the evolution of Rush Holt has been a sight to see. I happened to be interning for a GOP congressman during Holt's first campaign and remember the campaign exceedingly well. I remember being devastated that Holt had beaten Pappas thanks to Pappas' famous "Twinkle, Twinkle Kenneth Star" ballad.
Anyways, fast forward 10 years to today, and Holt has turned out to be one of Congress' biggest defenders of civil liberties. To be sure, he's a socialist economically, but few politicians have stood up for civil liberties as Holt has, something I blogged about here:
