I read the Star Ledger, PolitickerNJ, and local papers and blogs to get news of what is going on in and around NJ. What I have stumbled upon on the way is some very scary remarks from people who seem to be out of touch with what America is supposed to be about. Freedom. I have seen a few today that I cannot eve fathom to understand and have anonymously quoted them below with story references to see what other people think about them.
In a story about installing a network of security cameras on the street of Newark I saw the following disturbing comments.
- "civil liberties groups have been the downfall of this country for years now."
- "We need a police state to prevent crime"
I have always thought that security cameras on city streets have been a step in the wrong direction and after hearing some of the sentiments from other people I have become more concerned. When did we start thinking that more police and surveillance was the key to reducing crime? That reducing civil liberties was a crime fighting tool? I certainly hope these are not widely held views.
